Beulah Land (1980) Reviews

Beulah Land (1980)
Member Rating:
Beulah Land is an edited, movie-length version of the three-part TV miniseries adaptation of Lonnie Coleman's multi-part novels. The film is set in the Old South, with a time span ranging from 1827 to the postwar Reconstruction Era. Lesley Ann Warren stars as Sarah Kendrick, young belle of the Beulah Land plantation, who finds herself in love with a "damn Yankee." Sarah must also contend with a weakling brother (Paul Rudd) and a former slave (Dorian Harewood) who demands freedom as a right rather than a privilege. Beulah Land took forever to get before the cameras due to protests from black historical organizations; when it was finally telecast on October 7-9, 1980, NBC conducted a low-pressure ad campaign, as though the network was still fearful of stepping on toes despite the testimonial of a black Yale history professor, who commended the production for its "special sensitivity." ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I liked this movie but I felt that some of it was missing. I received two dics but none shone where Leon Kendrick went and what happened to Mrs Kendricks, sister that left her daughter. What happened to Bonard? No where does it show when Troy painted Mrs Kendricks portrate. I mean a lot was left out. Should this have been a three dics movie? Jean Hearn

First off this is a made for TV multi part mini series that was so popular back in the 80s. Key description "made for TV" so you know what to expect. Wooden acting, laughable dialogue, cheap sets, phoned in performances. Also the script is weirdly put together as if chunks are missing; major characters appear then disappear, their fates casually explained later in passing or not at all. As one reviewer asked, "is there a third disk missing?" So why four stars you ask? Because at its most rudimentary level this mini series is darn entertaining. Leslie Ann Warren is really engaging and seeing the multitude of 70's and 80s supporting actors passing through the film -many of which who have left us- is like seeing old friends again. The series even with all its faults, is a very guilty pleasure.

We enjoyed disc one and are looking forward to viewing disc two. We wish that multi disc productions could be delivered together as a set though.

This movie reminded me of soap opera. Decent acting but story line was a bit scattered. A bit on the boring side.
