Scrooged (1988)
Member Rating:
A darkly comic and surreal contemporization of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, this effects-heavy Bill Murray holiday vehicle from 1988 sees the former SNL funnyman assuming the role of television executive Frank Cross, the meanest and most depraved man on earth. Cross will stoop to unheard of levels to increase his network's ratings -- even if it means mounting outrageous programs to retain an audience, such as "Robert Goulet's Cajun Christmas" and Lee Majors in "The Night the Reindeer Died," with an AK-47-toting Santa. Cross plots his foulest move, however, for the Christmas holiday, when he will force his office staff to mount a live production of A Christmas Carol on national television -- and thus work through Christmas Eve. Cross's life is turned upside down with visits from three ghosts: a craggy-faced cabbie known as The Ghost of Christmas Past (David Johansen); the sugar-plum fairy Ghost of Christmas Present (Carol Kane) (who gets her jollies by bonking Frank across the face with a toaster oven); and, eventually, the caped, headless Ghost of Christmas Future, who will send Frank sliding into a crematory oven -- just before he gives the sleazoid one last chance to redeem himself. Along the way, the spirits carry Frank to scenes from his past, present, and future (per Scrooge) and impart a glimpse of how he became so thoroughly rotten. The radiant Karen Allen co-stars as Frank's girlfriend, Claire Phillips, and the film packs in cameos from countless celebrities -- among them, Mary Lou Retton, John Houseman, Jamie Farr, and, in a truly grisly and tasteless bit, John Forsythe. Richard Donner directs, from a script credited to the late Michael O'Donoghue and Mitch Glazer. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Not only one of the better Christmas movies out there, but also one of the funniest Bill Murray movies out there. A great twist on the Christmas Carol.

Somehow I think this movie has slipped past many people's radars and if you ask me, it is Must See for the holidays!

Not nearly as good as I had expected, nor as funny. Bill Murray's character is hilarious for most of the movie, but as the plot progresses he loses some of the humor. The final point of realization and "big speech" at the end seems almost completely ad libbed, which would be fine if it didn't drag on for so long. Maybe I just prefer Bill Murray in supporting roles like those of his brilliant Wes Anderson characters, but this was a miss. Still enjoyable though.

Not a bad copy of the Christmas Carol. Nice little story for Chirstmas. Bill Murray was, as usual funny. This would make a nice addition to a Christmas collection.

Good fun take on the Dickens classic. The ending was weak, but still worth a watch.

If somebody told me Bill Murray could do a Christmas movie prior to watching this, I would've told them to get out of town. After seeing this, I'd agree with them 100%. This is a great take on the Dickens classic, and this is something everybody is going to want to watch during the holidays.

This is the worst Christmas movie I have ever seen. This is probably the worst Christmas movie ever made.

I don't know if it gets any better because after an hour i couldn't watch any more of it. I was so bored that i almost fell asleep. I laughed at the beginning because it had a few jokes but after the first ghost (The ghost of christmas past) i got so bored. It delivered the message of Christmas in a very dark disturbing way. The dead guy in the beginning was disgusting and disturbing. Like i said, of what i saw it did get the message of Christmas across except not the holly jolly way we think of. The movie is dark and i was dissapointed. People said that it was hilarious and it is one of the best Christmas movies made. I disagree. Bill Murray's life in the beginning was good and i did laugh untill that dead guy showed up, after that, the movie goes downhill. I never finished it so i don't know how it goes. But what i saw convinced me that it wasn't good.
