This modernization of Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac casts Steve Martin as C. D. Bates, the fearless, quick-witted fire chief of a Washington State resort town. Bates' most trusted fireman is the handsome but tongue-tied Chris McDonell (Rick Rossovich). Both men are in love with the beautiful Roxanne Kowalski (Darryl Hannah), but Bates, adorned with a huge nose that makes Bob Hope look like Nanette Fabray, is convinced that he's too homely to win Roxanne's heart. Thus, in the self-sacrificing tradition of Cyrano de Bergerac, Bates courts Roxanne vicariously by feeding his rival Chris the proper romantic words and phrases. The inherent pathos in Roxanne is offset by moments of slapstick, notably the scene wherein C. D. Bates vanquishes a pair of hooligans with a tennis racket. Steve Martin himself is credited with the screenplay for Roxanne, though he generously cites Edmond Rostand as his inspiration. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A classic tale told in a romantic style. Roxanne is a sweet romantic comedy from a forgotten simple era of film making. No killing, or gratuitous violence. No language that you do not hear on network TV, and the sex happens off screen. The language is occasionally adult, and sex is discussed (not shown), so if you cannot handle this then stick with the Disney channel. Steve Martin and Daryl Hanna give career performances. The story, based on a timeless classic, does not follow todays romantic comedy formulas. It's gentle, cute, and amusing, suitable for most of the family. There is nothing here you do not hear or see during TV episode of Grey's Anatomy. In fact, the story is quite tame by todays network TV standards. Light the fire or jump in the hot tub and enjoy.

I really enjoyed This movie and Steve Martian is the man whom can pull it off, the movie does have a MPAA Rating: PG(Questionable for Children, Sexual Situations, Adult Language) so if you have small childred you may want to see it first before you bring them in the room, otherwise a very good movie. It has slapstick humor and it is typical Steve Martian movie. I do recommend it to all.

One of Steve Martin's better films of the late 80's.

Really fun film - we enjoyed it so much I bought a new blu-ray copy here :-) Mr. Martin was fabulous as always and Ms. Hannah was pretty... I wasn't surprised to see that Steve wrote this version of the romantic classic - it's very "like him" in tone, smoothly flowing from scene to scene and from giggles to momentary drama, with a thread of buttery romance throughout. Hope you'll love it as much~

I was very disappointed in the PG rating! We watched it with our 9 & 7 year old boys and I was ashamed at lettting them watch it. There were many swear words, references to body parts and sex, drinking and bar scenes and lots of taking God's name in vane.

steve martin does what steve martin does. this is just another setting. this should have been rated pg-13. there is NO reason to use the Lord's name in vain as they did SO many times.
