This is a generally competent, sufficiently romanticized Robin Hood story. Sets and costumes are convincingly period. All the classic Robin Hood characters are standardly rendered. Although the action sequences are somewhat stylized and often unbelievable, they're good fun and true to the spirit of the Robin hood tradition. However, it is Alan Rickman as the Sheriff of Nottingham who steals the movie and redeems it from cliched Hollywood historical epic schlock. His physicality is sharply pronounced, his delivery is sneeringly sardonic, and his dialogue, although borderline anachronistic, is crisp and often witty. *Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves* is worth seeing just for Rickman though the rest is largely forgettable.
