Fascinating, succinct, often brilliant, ultimately appalling page from mid-80s Thatcherite England as AIDS begins its initial rampage through all levels of the oblivious Iron Lady's kingdom. In the manner of "Brideshead Revisited" of 27-years ago, but not nearly so sprawling, this is GREAT television, light years ahead of anything from US TV. For any fan of British period drama, all gay film fans, and fans of sea-blue eyes. It's amazing to me this is a BBC production; in the US, this important series could only be aired on PBS with heavy censoring and then probably only at 2:00 AM. Here we see real gay men in real life situations, facing real hypocrisy and hatred from moneyed conservative AND liberal elites, and there is not one lisping, flouncing, castrated "Just Jack" caricature, anywhere. Excellent acting throughout by everyone.

A very well done film to say the least! The flavor of the period was completely captured in every respect..I thought the sex bits were somewhat overdone and a bit indiscreet at times..infact most of the time...the only actor I knew from past films was John Standing...the lead character was perfect for the part and his friends and cohorts echoed his sentiments...gives the upperclasses a bad name.tsk..tsk..having lived in the London for several years, all this didn't have any relevance for me..4 stars!

Perhaps the most faithful adaptation of a novel I have ever seen. For devotees of the brilliant Hollinghurst story, this 3-part series does no wrong whatsoever ... and in fact renders it more visceral when needed. Hollinghurst's characters are brought to life in stunning clarity by an impeccable cast of performers. I watched over two nights, in the company of a fellow reader, and found myself (/ourselves) utterly swept away. The making of The Line Of Beauty was clearly an act of true and complete devotion.

I got this by accident and loved it! I wish US TV could have shows like this.

What a surprise! I rented this on a whim and had low expectations, but WOW! "The Line of Beauty" is a complex story with a broad cast of characters in the spirit of "Tales of the City." It's a trilogy of one-hour episodes, but I watched them all in a single evening, unable to let go of the story or the characters until the plot resolved. And I suppose that's what makes this even more powerful: Everything is said that needs to be said, while just the right storylines are left in limbo to keep you thinking. This is definitely worth your time.
