True this is a dark comedy but rather than being morose of morbid, it is more of the examination of the human spirit. You get wrapped up in the great performances of the actors and drawn in by a very well written script. I think if you were to compare the feeling of this movie you would most aptly compare it to Juno. It has the quirky emotional humor that at times can be sad but over all ends up being an uplifting story of the survival of the human spirit.

It's not a big deal if you didn't like this movie. Go ahead and keep enjoying mindless action movies with bad acting, and a plot as thin as my dad's 40 year old cotton briefs. Don't get me wrong, I love those movies too, but don't rip on a flick as well made as this one. What an imaginative story, and well written screenplay. How could you not root for the guy, his family, and an entire town that backed him up. Can't see that playing out in this LA suburb.

I was entertained and mentally stimulated by this movie. It provoked both thoughts and emotions and managed to make me sympathize with nearly every character. No Character felt undeveloped. Non one felt like prop to advance the story. They all felt like real people, and for the strangeness of the subject matter, the only weakness of this movie may be that once you remove a sextoy domestic partnership from it, this just wasn't strange enough...It has a quirky & cliche vibe all at once...as if, like Nirvanas sound during the Grunge period, has become an impersonation of itself. Quirky IS cliche now. Indie means not horribly insulting. Indie means pandering to your hipster ego not your safe with the feeling that this is the same crap that 's been dripped into my mouth for years. But 'Lars' manages to still be sweet, to still feel reel enough, and to still let us be losers for a minute. We're not cool in this world that Lars invites us into, but we like it there.

Finally something different! Not for everyone. The movie walks a fine line between fantasy and reality (I stole this line from the special feature). It had to be done perfectly and for me it was. Excellent performances by the whole cast and director. Be sure to watch the special features afterwards.

If you like odd, strange "out there" movies give this a shot. If you don't, don't even try. Good sweet story, good acting etc, but again very different. If you liked....come to think of it I can't think of one movie that is like this one. It's one of those "some of you will like it alot, but most won't be able to get into it, " kind of movies. For fans of Ryan Gosling, which I am, you should give it a try as well, he is one of the few actors that could pull this off.

One of the worst movies I have seen in a long time. Just what is funny about a mentally ill guy who is in love with a life sized doll?
