Read More I found this movie to be very disturbing because I had no idea about the original story so I didn't know what to expect. The music is amazing as well as the characters. It's a bit gory for my taste but after I watched it I couldn't stop thinking about it. I would recommend it if you have the stomach for some of the scenes. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Much to my happy surprise, it translated to screen in a seamless way. Also to my surprise was the singing abilities of all in the cast. Perfectly delivered songs, as gory as it should have been, all coupled with a dreary London background. 1st time in the movies, 2nd time at home with my family.... even my husband stayed awake throughout and commented on how much he enjoyed it... gore and all! If you don't like blood or musicals, this is certainly not for you, but if you can see past that to everything that went into putting this on film, it's a definite rent!! Read More I am a huge fan of this musical and was very excited to see the film adaptation. Unfortunately, they cut out all the best bits in the music and that, unfortunately, left some of the plot points sagging.
Johnny was very good. Helen Carter was not. I guess she got the role because of her relationship to Burton. But she ruined the film. And I normally like her. But all the joy and mania of the musical was simply missing. The best songs were missing. More Hot Pies, was missing! The whole thing about the chair wasn't funny in this movie and in the play - it is really funny!
This movie was a huge dissappointment. If you are going to remake a horror classic, don't take out what makes it so classic, and that is Sondheims funniest lyrics. But they did, so if you are a fan of the show, don't bother with the movie. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No | ||

Read More This is a musical and it is Bloody/Gore but if you have some what of a macabre sense of humor or just like a based on real story such as Jack the Ripper I highly recommend this movie. I hate Horror but this movie is better. A movie about a world where there is no Justice. A world of perfection where in reality it is horribly wrong, Sweeney proves it in a waterfall of blood and went mad along with Mrs. Lovett who realizes the world is messed up, takes advantage of the societies brain washed state by making pies out of the people to make a salary to survive. Johnny Depp fantastic as Sweeney. It is truly one of the best pieces of acting in a long time and the rest of the cast is amazing. The movie is an intriguing dramadey. Like a movie that makes you think, has dark humor rent it. Want to know more about the Legend of Sweeney buy it. Like at least one of the things mentioned above give it a chance. A true musical but with most of the chorus from the broadway play left out.Helena Bonham Carter plays Mrs. Lovett with such zest you really feel for her.Oh and the blood oozes and flies with gusto too.
