I saw a few of them and yup, they were gory. But once I got past the gore, the rest of the movie was AWESOME! Johnny Depp, one of my all-time favs, once again shows the incredible range this man has, but the rest of the cast was equally FABULOUS! Although not a Sasha Baron Cohen fan, I thought his performance was notable and the young man playing Toby was INCREDIBLE! Alan Rickman has always given steller performances and Helena Bonham Carter made my skin crawl as Mrs. Lovett!! I think if this one had toned down the gore, the Academy would HAVE to have given the Oscar... and I don't say that lightly! THE MOVIE WAS WONDERFUL AND WORTH IT!!! Read More I really do appreciate the movie, the acting that took place, and the cinematography, the beautiful screenplay... I'm not sure why some criticized it so harshly. If it bothers some people that it's a musical, do appreciate the story. The gore with the blood is artistically done. It wasn't classless or tasteless. I remember the last scene with his wife in his arms, with the puddle... It really did bring out the emotion in me. Tim Burton directed it so well. I can't say enough about the cinematography and the contrast lighting, the panning, etc... awesome style. Not for everyone, but a trademark of Burton's. Pure Genius. Read More I am fan of musicals, Tim Burton, and Johnny Depp, so I thought this would be write-in for a favorite film. Warned of the bloody content I rented it, and really just liked it a little. The songs are very strange and not catchy (aside form Pretty Women) and the whole look is so dark and dirty you kind of feel like you need to go outside for a walk after watching it! The blood content is huge- but the blood is a strange orange color that feels so far from the reality of a slasher film.... these things all added up make for a long, strange show.
I am sure Burton accomplished waht he had hoped to in this movie, but for me a night of entertainment and talent was wasted with this dark tale. For die hard fans of all of the above only- everyone else will probably turn this off. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More Julian Schnabel directed this poignant film adaption of writer and Elle Magazine editor Jean-Dominique Bauby's memoir relaying his thoughts and feelings after he suffered a devastating stroke that left him with only one eyelid left to communicate with - and he not only learned to do that but communicated his entire memoir of that time by dictating with only eye blinks. Fascinating story and since it it mostly seen from his own perspective you understand perhaps a little more fully what he must have gone through. His story is one of never quitting on life despite the obstacles. Beautiful story that was respectfully and beautifully brought to the screen. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Waaaay too much singing, and at times, hard to understand. I was really looking forward to this too, which is why it's such a bummer. When I saw "musical", I thought... Okay, a few songs, no big deal. But 80% of the flick is singing... way too much for me. Onto 'The Great Debaters'... Hopefully that fares better. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL?
