Johnny Depp continues to impress. What a great job. The movie was a scream. My whole family loved it.

In a nutshell this is: Broadway Musical meets Horror / Slasher flick, or Shakespeare meets Freddy Krueger. Holy Cow! Only Tim Burton and Johnny Depp could pull off such a darkly grotesque and morbid flick while singing. Yes some of it was over the top: the gore, the singing, the overly dark / gothic tone, etc, and some of the plot was predictable. Still, you will probably enjoy this if you liked Chicago / Moulin Rogue (both were broadway-like musicals based on emotionally raw subject matter).

After hearing all the good reviews from the paid critics I decided to watch this movie. I also like Johnny Depp, he and Helena Bonham were very dark characters and work well for the movie. I don't know what the original Sweeney Todd story was like but this was a bloody waste of time and a lot of other viewers seem to agree with me if you read the member reviews. Also it was hard to understand what was being said in a lot of the songs.

Formless and forgettable songs are only part of this musical's disaster-laden film adaptation. Depp, Rickman and Bonham-Carter are well-tested gems as actors but none has the voice needed to salvage this awful Sondheim score. (At least when West Side Story's producers went for box office draw in casting Natalie Wood, they were smart enough to dub her singing.) Burton should return to what he's best at - animation - since all he got were flat, 2-dimensional performances from everyone. The soundtrack tried very hard to puff up the drama with never-ending crescendos and high-volume blasts, but only succeeded in drowning out the already-unintelligible Depp and Carter most of the time. The icing on this inedible cake was the endless use of blood-spurting throat slicings. Burton ignored a basic tenet of moviemaking: one drop of blood is more frightening that a bucket of it, and the mere hint of bloodletting is even better. Overall, this film was a bloody wreck.

Overly grotesque and dark for my tastes. It was an interesting surprise to hear both Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter sing their parts, since apparently it was their first go at it -- as well as much of the supporting castmembers -- but again, just not my kind of movie. Too gory

Story line (if you can suffer thru it) is just plane lame. A combination of gory scenes and stupid songs. I did watch from start to finish. I thought it was just about the worst I have ever seen.
