This is a remarkable work, beautifully written, directed, and acted. It is somewhat of a period piece, really focused on capturing the state of East Germany in 1984, and it does so superbly. It is not really a thriller, nor suspenseful in the traditional sense. The emotional struggles that the characters go through, however, are gripping and powerful. This is, by far, one of the best movies I've seen; emotionally charged, dark, and very heavy, but of remarkable quality.

For those who say the film is 'SLOW', the action is in the character study. You have to pay attention with this one. I really felt as if I were in the movie, living under the dictatorship, and experiencing a dull, dreary existence, because you couldn't call it "life". The director really brought the experience to the viewer, and that takes time. I recommend this to everyone, especially those who say things like government eavesdropping on its citizens is OK, "because if you haven't done anything wrong, what do you have to be afraid of?" For those who don't know the answer to that question, watch this film and you'll find out!!

Great movie. Did not know what to expect, but we were pleasantly surprised. The movie is a little long but very entertaining and engrossing.

This movie is right up there with "It's a Beautiful Life"! Definite must-see. Subtitles are easy to read. For anyone who lived during the 1980's, this movie will touch a chord! Loved it!!!

I really enjoyed this movie. I wasn’t sure what this movie was about but I thought it would be like the Note Book, another really good foreign film. The film exposes unexpected goodness in some and weaknesses in others. It wasn’t action packed but a moving drama that I would recommend.

Absolutely wonderful. More meaningful to me because I had a chance to visit East Germany before the wall came down in 1985. It really touched me with it's humanity.

This movie is very slow to start. My interest was not piqued until 39 minutes into it, and I love independent, art house movies. The end of the movie made up for the 2 hour wait for the story to really come together. One reviewer said The Lives of Others had the best closing line for a movie - I agree 1000% - the last line made the whole movie.
