It is somewhat of a period piece, really focused on capturing the state of East Germany in 1984, and it does so superbly. It is not really a thriller, nor suspenseful in the traditional sense. The emotional struggles that the characters go through, however, are gripping and powerful. Read MoreFor those who say the film is 'SLOW', the action is in the character study. You have to pay attention with this one. I really felt as if I were in the movie, living under the dictatorship, and experiencing a dull, dreary existence, because you couldn't call it "life". The director really brought the experience to the viewer, and that takes time. I recommend this to everyone, especially those who say things like government eavesdropping on its citizens is OK, "because if you haven't done anything wrong, what do you have to be afraid of?" I am a lover of foreign movies and this one captivated me from the opening score and plot. It was a joy to watch a film that had so much depth to its plot, character and music.

This movie is right up there with "It's a Beautiful Life"! Definite must-see. Subtitles are easy to read. For anyone who lived during the 1980's, this movie will touch a chord! Loved it!!! WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes

I really enjoyed this movie. I wasnâÂÂt sure what this movie was about but I thought it would be like the Note Book, another really good foreign film. The film exposes unexpected goodness in some and weaknesses in others. It wasnâÂÂt action packed but a moving drama that I would recommend. WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes
