Read More this was a great movie. one that did not focus on the brutality of the japanese during the occupation, but how the people had to deal with it. many people are turned off by it because most likely, the were looking for some kind of action or sex, but this is not what this movie was supposed to be about. it was about the asian mentality of enduring hardship in order to meet your goals. sacrifice and enduring hardship is what most people cannot understand, so they belive this movie is boring. i pity those people who are still so closed minded. Leads you down the plot and doesn't lose you. With some background on China during the war, I can follow the period and understand the hazards and difficulties of the times. Read More The movie starts a little slowly for my tastes, but the 2nd half is engrossing and suspenseful... I found that I couldn't stop watching to see how it would all unfold. The beginning of the "seduction" of Mr. Yee is quite disturbing -- women viewers should be warned that the sex scenes are quite graphic while Mr. Yee essentially rapes Mrs. Mak during their first liaison. I thought it was pretty good. If you rented it for the sex scenes you are going to be disappointed. There are not that many. The story line is good. Butâ¦when I popped it into the DVD player its language was nothing but mandarin. This usually isnât a problem reading sub-titles, but the spoke so fast that you could not keep up with the reading. And I am an avoid reader, I read very fast and could NOT keep up with it. So not even ¼ of the way through the movie I had no idea what was going on and turned it off and returned it. Either they lied or the Blockbuster rep who replied is an idiot, ... Read More Before renting this I wrote Blockbuster and asked if it was the NC-17 or R-rated version. They wrote back saying it was the NC-17. Either they lied or the Blockbuster rep who replied is an idiot, because this is the R version. They don;t offer the NC-17 version. Anyway, I have seen all of Ang Lee's films except Brokeback Mountain (for obvious reasons) and so far they have all bored me to tears. This one is the worst so far. I thought some NC-17 level sex would at least make it semi interesting, but in this censored cut, the sex scenes aren't much racier than stuff you see on late night TV these days.
