Read More This is the R rated version. The original theatrical release NC-17 version is not a "Directors cut" or a cut with added scenes to titillate buyers and renters after the normal release. The NC-17 version is the theatrical release in the US. There was no R rated release in US theaters. The R rated version was made for censors in China and Malaysia.

Read More I can't help comparing this movie to "Black Book," a recent film about the Dutch Resistance movement against the Nazis. In both films, a young and beautiful Resistance fighter is called upon to seduce a key figure of the opposition and bring about his death. While "Lust, Caution" did hold my interest for the most part, "Black Book" had me on the edge of my seat throughout. There is something flat and static about "Lust, Caution," and I could never entirely believe how Wong could pull off her seduction of Mr. Yee, a major collaborator with the Japanese. It gets a very rare high of 8 out of 10!

It was 158 minutes long and why it took that time to tell this relatively benign story is beyond me. It is a visually beautiful movie with beautiful actors who do a nice job and beautiful costumes and make-up. It is directed well . However, there is simply not much more there. It doesnt take 158 minutes to devlop the simple story that it is, and to elicit the emotional dilemma which is the basis of the story. I cannot recommend this movie because there just isnt enough substance to the story. Read the description of the movie and you have the whole story right there except for the conclusion. Read More If you love brilliant films, then you will be drawn into this story of political intrigue, lust, & the Chinese resistance duing WWll. The sex scenes were very violent & explicit, but seemed necessary to the development of the story. The acting was superb & there are no words to describe Ang Lee's brilliance in bringing a poignant, realistic view of China during this period. I esp. did not like how the movie ended (will keep the details to myself for those who have not seen) and like previous reviewer mentioned, English subtitles are long and it's hard to follow. I did not particularly think that actings were good either. Overall, this is one of the worst of Ang Lee's in my opinion... did not meet all the hypes it's received. The heavy dialogue of the movie doesn't translate well to English and it is far too involved for subtitles. The best you can do is to scan and glean whatever you can without pausing too often. Even so, you don't have ample time to enjoy the visuals. Plus, when too much dialogue is condensed for subtitles, you lose much of what is actually being said on screen, thus diluting the sublties of the story. The 'lust' in this 'R' DVD version is represented in several redundant, edited sex scenes. If you are a Tony Leung fan, this is not a must-see film of his. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? With its long involved story line delivered in madarine languge with ENGLISH subtitles, it makes for a long,long,long,, boring READ. Mabe I should have read the book FIRST to get into this one, but this movie was just a chore. A hard chore.And the payoff wasnt there to be rewarded. I can give it one star for the great cinematography and sex scenes. I guess the director was trying to make a soft porn movie But it was BORING soft porn.If you are like me , and hate boring movies with subtitles,such as this movie is, this movie is a one for YOUR TRASH CAN. Dumb this garbage in your can quick!!Hopefully the director didnt make more than $500 for this picture, because it was garbage at the theaters.
