Read More Ang Lee's Lust/Caution is the most emotionally deep, strikingly filmed and historically/culturally fascinating movie I've seen in a long time. It feels as if you're in WWII China. See it if you can handle trying to absorb its poignant beauty while reading subtitles translating rapid Chinese dialogue (not to mention the quasi-pornographic scenes that got it an NC-17 rating, but they're instrumental to the plot). Read More Joan Chen is phenomenal in her ability to portray the transformation of a young, idealistic partisan into a politically-driven concubine, but at what cost. She is totally convincing. In one critical, heartwrending scene she explodes any possible salvation of the myth of the spy while detailing the nightmare her life has become. Ang Lee's direction is subtle and haunting with palpable tension. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

He has taken a segment of our society and placed âin your faceâ layers of complexities that are anchored in human souls. As with Brokeback Mountain, we are entangled in laughter, hatred, tears, sympathy, courage and cowardice interlaced with each character. Hauntingly, we are left to consider our life choices for days after the last frame is completed. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No
0 out of 0 people found this review helpful This movie is reminiscent of the great spy movies from the 1940's. If you were expecting an Asian style, period drama, you'll be surprised to see a movie that looks a lot more like a European film. The acting, directing, lighting, set design and cinematography were excellent. The movie looked so good that most of the principal characters' scenes were suitable for framing. The film's only noteworthy negative is that the soup thin story is so slowly drawn out over two and a half hours, that the ending may make you feel like shouting, "All that and that's how it ends ?!". The script seemed like it was written to be more of a character examination rather than a story about wartime events. Despite the audio defaulting to Dolby Digital 5.1, the sound came across as stereo. As for extras, there's a "Tiles of Deception, Lurid Affections" feature (16:59 min) that is similar to a "making of" extra and trailers for three other movies. Lightly recommended.WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More Obviously, if you don't like subtitles or rented the movie just for the sex scenes, your not going to like the movie. Sometimes the subtitles were a little fast, but I was still able to follow the plot. Reading some of the negative reviews, this movie was not at the top of my list, but I finally rented it. Once I got into the plot, the movie did suck me in and I was totally memorized. I watch the movie with my wife, and the movie definitely put us in the mode afterwards despite the sad ending.
