Marion Cotillard's thrilling, magical and mesmerizing, timeless performance as the French icon Edith Piaf is one of the greatest in film history. Best Actress 2007. Period. The film, however, has inherent shortcomings for those who don't understand french and are unfamiliar with Piaf's life. Cotillard's captivating lip-sync performances of Piaf's thrilling voice are not subtitled, for example, and the film's non-linear presentation may also be confusing for the uninitiated and perhaps spends too much time rummaging through Piaf's childhood to the exclusion of her adult romances, etc. Even with these problems, perhaps due to cultural translation, "Rose" nevertheless still packs quite a punch -- it even has one of the more memorable boxing sequences in film history. A must for any Francophile or French film fan or any fan of incredidble, sublime acting, in any language. Vive la France!

Fantastic film! This is one of the most amazing portraits ever constructed by a director and portrayed by an actress. The soutndtrack alone is a rare beauty. To experience the depth of the soul in Edith Piaf's voice it is quite wonderful to see the tragic life that gave her such depth. A brilliant performance by Marion Cotillard who should receive the academy award for best actress without a doubt. A beautiful film. Definitely it is the finest I have seen this year.

If you can handle a brilliantly made, brilliantly acted tragic film with subtitles, La Vie En Rose is for you. Marion Cotillard gives a performance that is seen once in a generation. This is a tough, gritty film that wrings out one's emotions. It is not for the faint hearted. My feeling is that we can learn from another's tragedy and Piaf's life was certainly tragic. From this standpoint, the movie is very fulfilling. The music is also beautiful and haunting. Highly recommended.

This was the most boring movie I've ever seen. I don't know why I forced myself to watch it to the end, although it did take me two days. I was so happy when it was over. Don't waste your time.

I watch a lot of foreign films. This was so horribly boring. They also jump the time line around so much, it becomes impossible to follow. It was out of my DVD player in about 55 minutes.

The music is enchanting but the narrative of Edith Piaf's life is totally lost in this poorly edited film. A shame, because the story is great- just presented poorly. Marion Cotillard is WONDERFUL but the film drowns her. You would do better to buy a CD of Edith Piaf singing.

This movie coming in at 141 minutes is like watching grass grow. Once again the french are really strugling to put out a movie of any substance and quality and missed the mark again. This movie with all its subtitles could have been reduced down to one hour and would still have gotten the grade of C.But at least it would have saved me alot of time. Want to see a great foreign singer??Are you Hungry for a female foreign singer?.Skip this BOMB of a french movie and rent "Selena" for the thirteenth time. That movie is timeless.
