An unknown virus has emerged, and with time running out for all of humanity, it's up to disease expert and former secret agent Colonel Jonathan Smith (Stephen Dorff) to isolate the source of the outbreak and expose the culprit responsible in an action-packed thriller penned by Bourne Identity author Robert Ludlum. Colonel Smith is not only one of the country's best-known disease experts, he was also a top agent in the highly classified Covert One agency that reports directly to the president of the United States (Academy Award-winner Anjelica Huston). Now, as a killer virus gives way to a far-reaching conspiracy which points to corruption in the highest ranks, Colonel Smith is charged with the task of tracing the origins of the super-bug to its shocking source. In the process of saving the world, he's about to find out just how far some people are willing to go to achieve ultimate power. Joining Tom Clancey in political suspense films, Robert Ludlum gives us a credible (albeit predictable from time to time) story pertinent to today's potential for biological terrorism. Ludlum doesn't mind killing off the hero's lover but does very little with it. While spreading clues via facial closeups, the action runs strong for almost all of its 165 minutes. Give it a PG-13 rating for some bloody violence - no language or nudity, so the NR rating comes from it being made for TV (a three-hour movie with commercials) and nothing else. I liked the film and it kept me interested with its action and plethora of interesting characters (yes - they are not much more than two-dimensional). I give it 3-1/2 stars (7/10).
This movie was a huge surprise for me, as I did not expect it to be enjoyable. The acting was right-on and the story really draws the viewer in quickly! Still predictable, it did keep you at some points questioning your assumptions of the end. Worth watching!
The story line was ingenious, a novel way to play on our fears. The acting was too predictable, every spy sported a look of suspicion on their face, looking arounf nervously at everyone they see. At 137 minutes the movie is too long for the story being told. I don't think anything was edited out. The action was less than I anticipated and character development was superfical. This would have made a great "Bourne-style" movie, but falls way short of the mark.
3 hours long... was this a mini series? Not anything close to the Bourne Identity standards. I have to give it a thumbs down, it could have been half the length; and I suspected who the bad guys were half way through it.
I read the book and was looking forward to seeing this movie; if you read the book, don't bother, it doesn't follow it at all. I was very disappointed, as some of the main characters from the book were not even in the movie. I also found the movie story line difficult to follow.
I have to assume this is made-for-tv fare. Not horrible by any means; it has an interesting premise that is harmed by two dimensional character portrayals.
The White House scenes are laughable and the bad guys are obvious from the start.
I agree with the other review here that says this could have been a very good Bourne-type thriller with a tighter script and more developed characters.
