I guess I didn't get it...I thought it was boring...I guess you need to be a teacher to find the humor...I watched until the end thinking...it's got to pick up but didn't for me...

I saw this movie at the Madison Film Festival in WI and it was absolutely hilarious. The whole audience was laughing from start to finish. 75% improve and 25% script makes for great comedy. The writer and director were at the screening and did a Q & A session after it. I believe it was the top rated, possibly top two rated, film at the festival. I would recommend this to anyone who has ever been a teacher, gone to high school, or anyone who likes the Christopher Guest'esq movies. It is a MUST RENT!!!

A mockumentary that tells it how it is. The main point of the movie is to show what a thankless difficult job being a teacher nowadays can be in a funny way. I remember high school, and a lot of the kids had this kind of attitude: they don't want to be there, they don't respect the teacher, and some will tell them where they can shove their lesson plans. The movie doesn't overdo it like you might see in an old Michelle Pfifer drama where the kids are carrying weapons like the old west. In "Chalk," the teachers' biggest dangers are lack of experience, cell phones, and the kids' attitude towards teachers. The really funny parts are those that humanize the teaching profession and shows that it's a job like yours and mine, complete with weirdo's, office pariahs, and people with a ton of personal issues. I found it both funny and sad.

Anyone who is a teacher, or is contemplating following that path should see this film. It's obvious intent is to show how difficult a job it can be, as it follows the path of a few novice teachers through the school year. While on the surface it seems to portray a typical high school and it's dynamics realistically, it's actually quite unrealistic in many points. Teachers campaigning against each other for teacher of the year?? I'm a teacher, and I've never heard of such silliness. The last scene in the movie shows a Mr. Lowrey on the last day of school contemplating weather or not to sign a contract for the following year.. as if any administration would put off knowing their staff line up to such a late date. With regards to the humor, I'm afraid it was lost on me as well. In spite of it's flaws however this movie has good intentions and is certainly worth your time for it's candor and "inside look".

This movie is hilarious for educators. We saw clips from this in a class when I was getting my license (as things NOT to do).

Horrible-I loved some of Spurlocks other work-not this one. I could only watch about 25 min before I started zipping it through at 8x. It played out more like a really bad reality show based on fiction. I am a public school teacher at an inner city school and if I taught like the teachers in the film, my students would eat me alive too. Spurlock could not imply any mssg in the film-even a judge it for yourself mssg. Do yourself a favor and rent Ferris Buellers Day Off for a good laugh instead of this caustic chalk.

The reason many viewers are finding this movie boring and depressing is probably because the movie had no clear objective. We're watching two hours of ineptitude, apathy, and snideness with no real objective. The characters are all static, the relationships are trivial and add nothing to the plot, and I really couldn't figure out what the filmmaker was trying to make me see. Was he trying to show how flawed public education is? All he showed were a handful of unhappy, slightly oblivious people bumbling through the school year. This movie doesn't really convey any message to the viewer, and you come away from it wondering why you've just wasted your time.
