It's fantastic on a grand scale with so many small touches that make it a real treasure. Sure the quality of the dvd isn't great but the film is still eye candy and it is a movie not to be missed. I can only drool at the thought of how this would look in HD. Truly a must-see.

Read More The "Master" and his four mistresses - the rules, the rebellion of the "house" and the consequences there-of. We never see the Master's face - we never leave the house, perhaps to promote some feeling of what the "mistresses" felt - to never really know the man and the feeling of being trapped within his slavery. Sad and haunting film. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More Songlian is a young university woman forced to marry when her father dies. She becomes fourth mistress to a wealthy man, and moves into a insular complex with his three other mistresses. Ambition, and no chance for life beyond the pleasing of the master, drives these women to scheme and plot to become his favorite. The movie is a web of hidden motives and blatent power plays, all couched in traditional manners and civility.
Raise the Red Lantern is a masterpiece, a beautiful movie, rich in color and design. The acting is equally magnificent. And the story has texture and depth.
Unfortunately, the quality of the dvd itself does it no justice. Taken directly from a worn tape, it contains streaks and contaminants. The subtitles contain typos and read like they were translated by someone with a marginal grasp of English (for example, they wrote "groovy" when they probably meant "moody," "savant" when they meant "servant.") This great movie deserves better. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Feminist film studies students, read Laura Mulvey and watch this film. The shot composition, narrative construction, Gong Li's acting - everything is totally perfect.
