May be Scorsese's and DeNiro's best film. This is a movie for people that want to see a brilliant character portrayal by one of the greatest actors and directors in American cinema history. Do not see if you like the typical mindless crap that is indicative of Hollywood these days. Oh, and Anthony B--stick to JLo films and things with big explosions. Read More Just for starters, i believe in my experience, that Robert Deniro in this film does the BEST acting i have ever scene on film, note, he isn't my favorite actor, but this is the best performance i have ever seen. i don't understand why other people thought this was slow, it shows the dark side of the american dream and how Deniro's self destructive character grows throughout the film, becoming worse and worse. must see Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? I have always read what a great movie this was. I waited and waited for the movie to get better and it never did. The staged boxing was about as fake as that in Rocky (boxers never put up their gloves to block punches....c'mon). The storyline drug on. To me, this is one of those movies that the critics elevated above its true merit, and now everyone hails it as a great movie. I have a tremendous amount of respect for DeNiro, but I was really disappointed in this one. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More I watched this movie because it was highly recommended and was an award winner, and because I love boxing movies, especially Rocky and Cinderella Man. What a mistake. The only thing I enjoyed about this was the actual boxing scenes, especially the one with Sugar Ray Leonard. The scenes were too short and never showed a whole fight. The story was choppy and hard to follow. And just when you thought the movie should end, it kept dragging on and on and had no defining climax or resolution. Then all of a sudden it just stopped. Very poor filmmaking in my opinion, and not worthy of any awards. This would be one star if it wasn't for the amazing boxing footage. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

I am a big fan of his work but not this one. The film consists of De Niro yelling and being an annoying paranoid abuser. Also this film is painfully boring. The good things are that it is amazingly shot, good fight scenes and its cool to see De Niro and Pesci younger. Worth a rent if you are a Scorsese fan but if not skip it.
