I brought my 3 daughters, age 11, 8 and 7. I would say it is more suited for the preteen age group. If you liked "My Girl" than you'll like this movie. I went in expecting a sci-fi and it is totally not a sci-fi. This is a drama and it touches upon the emotions and imagination of a young boy and girl who are outcasts. It's full of adventure, suspense and emotion. My mind gave it a 5 star rating, but my heart gave it a 10. I agree that only those old enough to read the book should see the movie. Read More I was really disappointed as I thought that there would be more fantasy type stuff in this movie but there was very little. I took my 7 year old daughter and she absolutely loved it. I think that the story line was good but from what they show you on the preview to what you actually see....all of the fantasy stuff is in the preview so what you see is what you get. There was a little fantasy adventure in it...but only a little. This movie is not appropriate for small children. Spoiler....the second half of the movie deals with death. It was a total tear-jerker. My daughter and I were crying through the whole second half of the movie. Not what I was expecting for a 'light fantasy adventure' movie as it's been advertised as. Read More The biggest problem with this movie is that it's been marketed as a fantasy film and it's far from it. I was highly upset after sitting thru 2 hours of what amounted to a made for TV Hallmark like movie. Yes there was some good points made in the movie about friendships and it is something I would like for my children to view when they are about the same age as the main characters in the film. I believe that after seeing the finished product Disney realized that it wasn't suited to be a feature movie and so they willfully spun the trailers for the movie so as to make one believe it was a fantasy film.
