I really liked the beginning and how it had fun with children's imagination. I really loved the friendship that the boy and girl had. The ending totally ruined it for me. It was like a stab in the heart and it made me not want to watch the movie again. The sadness was overwhelming and is not good for children.

It's unfortunate that Disney marketed this movie so heavily as a fantasy tale similar to a "Harry Potter" or "Chronicles of Narnia" film. I wasn't familiar with the 1977 novel before watching this and I was definitely a bit underwhelmed by the lack of a true fantasy setting. Naturally, about half way through, I realized that Disney's marketing machine was way off, however, I also realized that I was enjoying a movie far more meaningful than I originally expected. It's more accurate to categorize this as a young-adult story more on a level with "Where The Red Fern Grows" or "Stand By Me" than with "The Hobbit". There's absolutely nothing wrong with that and I'm now interested in reading the novel, having seen the film. However, once again, the movie was horribly mis-advertised and potential viewers should be warned. It seems to me that the appropriate age would be 12 and up.

I must own this DVD I would watch this movie over & over & over again !!! I loved it. This movie reminded me so much of myself and a friend a of mine that died from Brain Cancer. I just cried and cried when the little girl died then when he made up with his little sister that was so bittersweet. I loved the special effects all the fantasy scenes. I ADORED THIS MOVIE. I don't know about young kids watching it that didn't have a understanding of death and or god but otherwise I loved it.
