It's a great fairy tale along the lines of the classic "The Princess Bride." There is as much comedy as there is romance in the movie, and anybody but very small children will enjoy it. The cast is terrific and it includes Pfifer in a major role as the evil witch and De Niro playing a flying-ship captain who isn't as tough as he wants people to think. Both heavy weights seem to enoy playing the light hearted characters, which is in tune with the whole movie. It's whimsical wonderful movie that really works. We laughed out loud several times. I was not going to allow my kids (ages 11-9) to watch it due to the pg-13 rating but most cartoons these days have more questionable material, maybe the witches and the animal entrials thing is what earned it that rating?! I don't think there was any cussing. We liked the characters and the story line! I wish they had used someone other than Robert DeNiro for the captain part, he is not a comic and it was a stretch for him to pull off the gay thing, which gratefully was done without shoving gay rights down your throat! Michelle Pfeiffer was wonderful and very funny, it was amazing to watch the transfomation from ugly to beautiful and back to ugly again! Really the film was great! It was wonderfully refreshing to watch something that wasn't so violent and non stop action. So many movies these days seem to rely on non stop action and constant violence. Full of wonderful characters and comic moments. Neither my husband or I have read the book but from my experience it is hard to top a book. I want to read the book now.
