Linney and Hoffman (and everyone else in the film) are superb. The sad element of the elderly parent with dementia is balanced by the fact that the he was a wretch and the children do the right thing by him although he doesn't deserve it. Laura Linney's ambivalence in practically every aspect of her life begins to disappear after he dies. Altogether a good movie!

If you're parents are under the age of 65 you'll probably not enjoy this movie. It will be too slow and pointless. But if you have aging parents with any health problems, you'll find much to identify with. You'll feel the pain of these main characters and you'll laugh at things that are revealing about yourself and your own desires for how you wish things could be. It's certainly not a blockbuster but it is well done and I can whole heartedly recommend it with the above criterion applied.

Much more a drama than a comedy, though there are humorous moments that happen that takes the edge off this hard look at both life and death. Two siblings mostly out of touch with one another are called to look after their dying father who they have been estranged from most of their adult life because of his cruel and abusive behaviour toward them in their youth. They find themselves finding the best way they can to care and look after a man that never did the same for them. In all their akwardness these two adult siblings both support and awaken in each other clearer paths for their own lives. Very beautifully written and directed. The performances by Laura Linney and Phillip Seymour Hoffman as well as by Philip Bosco were all excellent. I seem to have rated this higher than the average, but I suspect it's because it's one I can very much relate to at this juncture of my life and I can say they nailed this exactly right. A serious but very smart film.

Character driven movie. Linny and Hoffman fully embrace and embody exactly what was needed to pull of picture.

This is a good movie. The story, the actors and the ending all made sense and provided and engaging movie watching experience. The old man starts writing with his own crap apposed to a roller mate pen and the kids have to respond. The Kids Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman did an outstanding job performing in rolls that were designed for outstanding actors. You did not like them but you felt for them. The Buffalo scenes were bleak and dreary but I guess Buffalo is that way so it wasn’t much of a stretch but the movie had that Being John Malkovich or first quarter Joe Versus the Volcano feel which only added to the Savage mystique.

It was clearly well made. The characters and acting was great. It's just pretty slow and I was kind of sleepy when I watched it. I'm not pissed off that I rented it but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I kept waiting for the action of the point of this moving to become apparent. Instead, I sat through 2 hours of a very slow, pointless flick.
