Read More This is one of the finest movies I have ever had the pleasure of watching. It is one of the most realistic depictions of the era and controversy surrounding the abolition of slavery by the British Empire. A powerful and moving drama set immediately post-American Revolution, there are extremely strong themes which are addressed with historical accuracy, intensity, and stunning realism.
Make sure to get the uncut version. There is awesome foreshadowing and character development which is vital to the movie. Also, you will not want to miss the attached rendition of Amazing Grace by Chris Tomlin, containing some of the original verses.
Enjoy. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Ioan Gruffurd's riveting performance as Wilberforce is as deep as it can get. Wilberforce's emotional, physical, and spiritual sufferings are clearly expressed throughout the film. Michael Apted's directing is genius, giving the audience a breathtaking and refreshingly honest portrayal of 18th century England. The sets are brilliantly executed, complementing the scenes with perfection. The psychological impact of slavery is neither overdone, nor underdone. My only (minor) issue with the film is the director's decision to use so many flashbacks, as it was slightly confusing at times which time period was in front of me. However, if one pays attention to subtle details, such as the makeup, setting, or condition of the characters, the particular instance of Wilberforce's life is eventually discovered. It was interesting to see the back story of the slave trade from the British side. Some good acting, so many great actors are in this movie, and it has a decent story. I thought it was slow in some parts, but I didn't expect it to be some great face paced movie. I recommend this movie as a one time watch. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Gorgeous cinematography! Ioan Gruffudd gives another stellar performance (I personally don't believe he could give a bad performance if he tried), and the supporting cast (including Albert Finney and Michael Gambon) is equally brilliant. The film strikes a great balance in looking both at Wilburforce's political struggles and his personal issues, including how his health was destroyed by his work and how his love for Barbara Spooner gave him the will he needed to continue fighting. It reminds the viewer of just how much one must sacrifice in order to make the world a better place. Highly recommended! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Superb acting, great scenery. Anyone interested in history should watch this good movie. There's much to learn about the politics, social classes, and even the origin of the "Amazing Grace" song. My family and I watched this without leaving our seats. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No |
