It's a great precise lesson on how the UK came to abolish slavery. Solid acting by Ciaran Hinds, Albert Finney and Michael Gambon. Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic Four) is a more interesting actor when he's allowed to use his own accent. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More This is a superb story about how every one of us, regardless of how big or small, what our disabilities are, can make a difference for truth and justice in this world. The back and forth type of narrative did make it a tad difficult to follow, but watching it a second time around (in which I was happy to do), cleared everything up. I encourage young people to watch it, for in this age of hopelessness and despair, it gives a positive message about standing up for what is right diplomatically, even in the midst of persecution. I love period films, and this one was pulled off beautifully. The costumes were gorgeous, the scenery, etc. Albert Finney was wonderful, as always, and the rest of the cast showed tremendous acting prowess. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Read More This movie was filled with great actors, great sets, great costumes and an intensely interesting piece of history to cover, in my view. However, the movie was badly flawed because the director/editor chose to mix up the timing. The movie bounces back and forth between a current, later period in the early 1800s and an earlier period in the late 1700s. But the audience is often left confused as to when things are happening and how many years have passed between events. It is just too impressionistic and dreamy for my taste. It's also a bit grating to see how the persona of Wilberforce's wife has been updated for a modern audience. Some historical accounts of her would disagree with her strong, upfront, public expression of political support for her husband. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More Though there are few period pieces I don't swoon over, this one was an absolute bore, and I mean bore in the British sense! Took me 3 sittings to get through it, and despite the beautiful costuming, scapes, sets and cinematography it was tough to get through. It is an interesting bit of history that should have made a great movie but failed to do so. Despite the liberties taken and historical inaccuracies, they still failed to produce a compelling piece. A real disappointment Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No
