Despite this being a politically based theme this movie has a great subject in William Wilburforce. His life is the stuff great novels are made of. The movie does an excellent job of showing his friendship with the Prime Minister of England and his passionate pursuit of the end of slavery through political change, not violence. The points are made without the usual graphic depictions and I prefer this to overt gore. Read More A thoughtful, earnest telling of how slavery was abolished in England, long before the Emancipation Proclamation in the US. I appreciated the story of honorable men who would not stop putting forth the truth in the face of overwhelming opposition. As they say, "Evil abounds when good men do nothing". Though Wilburforce, well- played by Ioan Gruffudd, wanted to quit many times, he kept doing what is right. It was an inspiration for me to do the same. I highly recommend that everyone see it. Finney, Gruffudd and Garai delivered a quality movie that was not preachy but informative. It was especially good to see British actors portraying British characters instead of wannabes. It added authenticity to the roles. Now, if movie studios would do the same for Asian movies. Many being British stage actors of the classic genre. This is a story about a real person that fought for ideals held dear. Conviction, drive, purpose is all there. After watching this movie you find yourself evaluating how you can make your life significant. Are we doing enough to affect the world? So if you are looking for a motivating movie, this is a good one. Well done cinematography, sets, costume, adds to the already brilliant story. Wilberforce really did change his world. We can all agree that slavery was (is) horrible. The problem is the pace of the movie is slow and borders on boring. It put me to sleep during two attempts to watch it. The first time it happened I thought that it was me and perhaps I was more tired than I felt. The second night I started the movie up at the last place I could remember the story line; approximately 1/3 into the movie. I fell sleep again about 2/3 through the movie.
