Self-involved corporate raider Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) has recently split up with his girlfriend. Seeking directions to the Beverly Hills Hotel, he makes the acquaintance of free-spirited hooker Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) and decides to put her on a 3,000-dollar retainer as his "date." He Cinderellarizes her by bankrolling a full wardrobe and cosmetic makeover. Of course, the setup will be strictly platonic. A disarming modern-day fairy tale, Pretty Woman was the picture that made Julia Roberts a superstar. As charming as she is in her "giggling" sequences, Roberts' best scene is her triumphant return to a posh Rodeo Drive shop where she'd been previously snubbed. Keeping Pretty Woman afloat throughout is the buoyant direction of Garry Marshall and the always welcome presence of Marshall's stock company of actors, including Hector Elizondo as a stuffy but golden-hearted concierge. Pretty Woman began its life as a much darker story of prostitutes and homicidal drug dealers, but more box-office-savvy heads ultimately prevailed. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Our first meeting with Julia Reberts was great. Garry Marshall went to Northwestern like I did Always enjoy his directing and writing.

I agree with Rebecca L. I have to look at it as 'fantasy' -- but if we can watch Harry Potter et al, we can surely accept this fantasy for grownups. Like all good fairy tales, it does have a moral, and it does say good stuff about loyalty, kindness and the power of love to redeem. Hey -- just like Midnight Cowboy, but so much more fun to watch.

Yet another film that I enjoyed as a child (and probably shouldn't have seen), and yes, loved it. As a child I thought the condoms she pulled out of her boot were suckers.

Marvelously updated Cinderella story with the rough hewn sensuality Roberts does so well. A predictable as sunrise plot with Roberts immersed in her role with gusto and relish. Not a classic but classically delivered. Great flick to share with that special someone.

Two weeks ago I was supposed to receive Pretty Woman, but I got The Perfet Man instead. This week, I was disappointed in seeing the same wrong dvd in the Pretty Woman sleeve. What's wrong with the service this time?

This has to be one of the greatest love stories ever told. A hooker and a business man. The chemistry between Gere and Roberts is nearly palpable. This film is a must see if you've never heard of it or never seen it then go out and get it as soon as possible. This film is a true romance classic. Overall: A+++++

no matter which way you slice it, this beotch is a hoe in a major way. Not only does she has the herp, clap, and crabs, she also gets a body double just to do her top less scene. At least they could have thrown an Unrated version our way with a little kooch and some gerbil action
