18 out of 19 people found this review helpful There is something very winning about James McAvoy's performance in this movie. It is a very enjoyable comeing-of-age film. The 80's music soundtrack was perfect and unintentionally hilarious. A very good date night rental.WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More IIf your idea of a good romantic comedy is upbeat humpor full of wit, irony, malapropes, coming from a working class guy who enters a posh univerity looking to fulfill a lifetime dream of pursuing knowledge and suddenly finding himself the object of the affection of two totally different but very attractive as well as smart female classmates---wow!! This is it. Set in the mid-80's complete with lots of Tears for Fears, Psychedellic Furs, The Cure and many others as background music, I found this movie an absolute delighty! Spoofing the University hallenge quiz show of that era which was immensely poular with the Brits, this BBC/HBO production will be absolutely HATED by those equating humor with nudity, vulgarity and "potty" gags! Read More If you are a Brit, you will know instantly what University Challenge was. Over here, locally it was Academic Challenge (in some areas I believe): bunch of brainiacs answering questions with silly buzzers and silly theme tunes and the TV sets might just fall apart. Ahhhh back in the day when the sets were real. But... you know what? This was very real and this film does depict what it might have been like, to WANT and NEED to get on a show such as this. Jeoporday eat your heart out! But ... all smarty pants are normal youths and teenagers, so coupled with the stress of the NEED to win and the challenges of student years this is a wonderful film that highlights all the right parts about that eternal era of 80's and beyond. One .... step .....beyond! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

This one is set in 1985-86 in England at Bristol college. A freshman there struggles to find his place, win the girl and impress her by being on a college quiz show and perhaps to impress himself as well. It had a few laughs but over-all nothing real special. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More I never expected to become so thoroughly engrossed in this movie. A few of the characters were at times superficial, but James McAvoy's character had a great deal of depth. The story wasn't what I expected either. This was another pleasant surprise from what is becoming one of my favorite film actors. The music was a perfect complement to the story. My family found this film to be quite a gem. Rent it, you won't be disappointed (unless, as someone else mentioned, your idea of a brilliant comedy includes potty gags, pratfalls and nudity). The story line was very predictable and the same story has been done 50 times since the 80's. Quite a disappointment!! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No |
