Read More From the point of view of the 18-year-old protagonist, Kip, the film depicts his own internal struggles to come to terms with the harsh realities of his past and through them to explore the demons that beset the lives of his family, companions, and finally his lover, Jenny. Kip's friends include gay and apparently bisexual people, who play a significant role in his life. The plot is interwoven in a complex but easily comprehensible manner, and spans three generations of his family. It is moving in its sentiments and wise in its revelations. The acting is excellent; the script is engaging; the editing is seamless. Only had two issues: (1) The lead male was at least 25 years old, which leaves me to believe there are no 18 year olds with talent in Canada; (2) The attractive lead female wore a lot of makeup (way too much!) - but she worked in a food bank helping the poor, which leaves me to believe there is a correlation between food banks and modeling in Canada. Very confusing! While these two issues impacted the credibility of those characters, the film was strong enough to emerge unscathed as a touching, and moving story.

Both types of relationships are treated equally and with great respect. There are also many wonderful friendships that develop, even among the most unlikely of characters. There are many wonderful lessons about life, love, and self-redemption. I highly recommend this movie to any gay man, woman, or any open-minded person who wants to be deeply touched. Read More You can't fault a film like EIGHTEEN for lack of good intentions: the desire to show how important love can be--between straights, gays & men in uniform! From the number of staggeringly good reviews posted here & on other rental sites, viewers appear to find those intentions count more than the nearly total lack of reality--psychological & otherwise--throughout this shockingly woeful movie. Its sincerity & unfortunate tastefulness, however, are coupled so bizarrely to crudity & sentimentality that the movie fails to rise even to the level of camp. Let's start with the nitwit casting: the 18-year-old "hero" is played by a 29-year-old actor. The less-then-gifted writer/director Richard Bell constantly, clunkily inter-cuts the past with present, finally making a sudden leap into sci-fi/fantasy by converging the two near the end. (I must admit that the scene between the gay hooker & his virgin "john" as they trade "I love you's" did almost win me over.) Still, this is one appalling movie.
