Or that's the story, anyway. Alfred develops the best illusion ever seen and Angier becomes obsessed with discovering it. When Angier is murdered, Alfred is arrested for it. In prison, he gets hold of Angier's journal and reads Angier's account of trying to decipher his own (Borden's) journal, which sent him on an obsessive quest to visit Nikola Tesla.
It makes excellent use of literary devices to explore obsession and deceit in human nature. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More This was a movie that has to be watched very carefully to understand what is happening as the two magicians compete. It has a complex plot, which I believe, was to try to trick the viewer as much as the audiences at the magic shows. The acting was good and it was a good story of obsession dominating almost everything in the two men's lives. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Tense plot, pitting two rival magicians against each other seeking escalating revenge, set in the late 1800's. The two try to top each other's tricks and uncover how they were done, with no regard to life or limb. Weaves in the mystery of science by including Tesla, the "mad scientist" investigating wireless transmission of electricity. There's enough twists and turns to keep the momentum going to the end...which we found to leave us hanging...What was real? So, for the ambiguity, only 4 stars. Seems everyone is either surprised by the ending or they "figured it out early on"...as for me I was impressed by this screenplay and did NOT (thankfully) figure it out and was pleased to personally have that surpise at the end. Good performances by all - no not perfect - but damn near. Most of all for orginality. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Although the film is magnificently presented, it is quite hard to keep up with the plot, which is very complex and fast paced. I had to see some portions twice, and even then am not sure if I completely understood everything. Make sure you are wide awake when you view this, but do see it. Read More To paraphrase a statement by one of the leads, "once you know how the trick works, you're not much interested anymore" I preferred to be the little girl who sees the canary trick and remains mystified. Instead I had the little boy's realization and was horrified. Animal lovers, just pass on this one. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No |
