I was expecting a gore fest, but was pleasantly surprised at how the character and storyline were developed. I thought the acting was terrific and Ulliel's protrayal of the young Hannibal was breathtaking. When a movie's main character is the bad guy it is imperative the audience connect with him/her on some level. Unlike Perfume, which is so painfully miscast; despite the protagonists plight, you fail to identify with him and or even pity him. Despite the brutality of Hannibal's actions and subsequent monstrous existence, you can now look at his life as a boy and be able to go "Ahhh, now I get it"; not as a rationalization for his actions, but as means of understanding the character. Read More I rented this movie prepared to be scared out of my mind, and given a really compelling backstory about Hannnibal Lector. The first 15 minutes of the movie are the most interesting, the rest of what follows seems like an exercise in gore. It's as though the writers of the movie seemed less interested in what makes a psychopath a psychopath, and more interested in inventing gruesome ways for characters to die. Beyond the opening sequence, I really didn't care about Hannibal (or any of the other characters) at all, which is a shame since he's one of cinema's best villains.
