If you think that lying to one's self and others is a great way to get ahead in life, you will love this movie. This movie is an example of the Emperor's New Clothes Syndrome, where all the elites gather together into an agape feast, sniff each others' flatus, and proclaim it is good. Boring: 5 stars. Stupid: 5 stars. An overall picture of perfection with a BS rating of 5 stars.

I pride myself on "getting' and enjoying more artistic and unusual films, but this one was beyond me. It was difficult to follow and was boring. It was very choppy, the dialog made little sense and the darkness of the film itself made it difficult for me to concentrate. Bob Dylan is a legend and his life is a fantastic story alone without running it with this muddy attempt to tell his story. The only believable performance was Cate Blanchett.

Just a flagrant waste of time, I liked his music but the film was awful

This interpretation is too late for most, I think. I'm of that era so I can validate inside references and see the iconic characters like Joan Baez and David Frost (portrayed with ficticious names). As episodic and anecdotal, I watched a few chapters at a time. Kate Blanchett entertains best in her part. Marcus Carl Franklin, as a conceptualized young Dylan (a "reincarnated" Woodie Guthrie), was green; not believeable in a role out of his range. Bale and Gere were bland. Ledger was okay. This is a broad and rather vague impression of "Dylan-ness". Bob Dylan has generally had a narrow following over time which further limits the appeal of this film. You just had to be there.

Yes, I'm another boomer and have enjoyed Dylans music for years, but this movie is VERY abstract and VERY disjointed -- and unless you are REALLY into Dylan's life and music, you will be VERY disappointed. When I rented this movie I was thinking it would be, maybe, like The Doors movie, but it wasn't -- at all. I was thinking entertainment -- I got an abstract painting. As an example -- Kate Blanchard plays the Dylan character in part of the movie -- yea, it's one of those kind of movies. This movie is art -- beautiful art, well acted, filmed and scipted but abstract and disjointed art, not your normal entertainment.

Soundtrack was great. The movie was strange and disjointed, I'm very patient but it took me three sittings ti get through it; it didn't really hold my attention.

Don't waste yr time. This movie not only doesn't pull off the passion and spirit of the era but is sadly guilty of only attempted creativity. No spark. No message. Not the Bob Dylan I love. And Cate Blanchett should never have won any awards for the poorest role of her career. Totally lifeless.

As a Dylan fan since pre-teen days, I approached this film warily as some friends had not liked it. I do highly recommend this film for those who are familiar with Dylan's music and history . Many of Dylan's song lyrics are full of disparate images and seemingly disjointed story lines, but that is their appeal, and so it is with Todd Haynes' film. In that context it is very interesting to watch and visually arresting. ALSO the DVD includes some very helpful material and if you are hesitant to plunge right into the film the introductory material and "Making of..." segments are worth watching BEFORE you see the entire film.

I loved ths movie!!! The acting was superb, especially Cate Blanchett. It really shows the ways that Dylan has evolved over the years. It was fun to see the little touches put in for us die-hard fans. However, I would not suggest this movie for anyone who is not familiar with the Dylan of the sixties. I will watch it again and again.
