This was an underdog story of a little girl who was dedicated to winning a beauty contest. Although there were subplots, the main plot was getting her to the contest. I didn't see it as making "fun" of beauty contests or one where the mom pushes the girl to succeed. There was some dark humor and it was funny at times. In the end the girl did a routine that was questionable for a girl her age and was thrown out of the contest. The ending was anti-climatic since the story made you root for the heroine but she was out-classed by the other girls.
