Read More I must confess at the age of 65 to never having seen ONCE UPON A MATTRESS in any of it many incarnations. This surprises even me, considering the avid theatergoer I once was--before arthritis, ticket prices & lack of quality offerings drove me into the realm of the wide-screen monitor & daily DVDs. So I come to this version a "Mattress" virgin and--wow-- I thoroughly enjoyed it. What a treat to hear a real Broadway score again! Even if this is not a first-rate example (it's no Porter), second-rate is so much better than most of today's paltry musicals ("Wicked" is an exception). The score by Mary Rodgers is sweet, eminently hum-able and alternately lovely & bouncy, and Jay Thompson's lyrics are always funny and surprisingly clever, given their pretty much post-Porter/pre-Sondheim time. This cast--combining TV, film and theatre folk--is classy indeed, with musical kudos going to a splendid Matthew Morrison ("Light in the Piazza") & Zooey Deschanel (surprise!).
