This is a fantasy film set in modern films. The film is beautifully shot captivating all the beautiful colors (shot by India's best cinematographer) which makes it visually appealing. The story is a little strange but introduces you into the world of a simple charming Indian woman and proves to be heart-warming till the very end.

Fabulous color, romance and mystical qualities in this screen adaptation of a very good book. The actress is beautiful, shy, and alluring, the romantic lead actor's eyes capture the viewer drawing them into the film. As their story unfolds, the Mistress is tempted away from her obligation to the spices, thinking of herself for once, instead of others she must serve. The consequences to others range from severe to funny. Excellent character performances by supporting cast. Fire and duty combine in a satisfying finish.

We really enjoyed this movie bringing some customs from the East and mixing it with Northern California. It contained a hint of the supernatural connected with Indian traditions with a gorgeous love story included. There was also an education about traditionally how the use of certain spices is said to provoke a reponse, i.e. saffron helps fill empty nights, garlic as an aphrodesiac; pepper loosens the memory to speak of things not said before - to reveal emotional secrets and more.

I loved this Movie! My sister thought it was boring. That's how it goes. I guess you'll have to find out for yourself. But is is definetly not for Guys.

This movie was charming and although I do not like McDermott that much, he is pretty much the same character as in his other acting roles. I would recommend this to the female population but not the male. Way too many holes in the plot for my husband to watch.

I rented this movie cause I love Mcdermott. He is gorgeous. This movie was so romantic. Rai is so beautiful, she has big beautiful eyes and I love the way she was dressed. It was very interesting for me to learn of her customs. It made me want to learn more about spices and about how they can heal people and make you fall in love. Rai is very sweet and she doesn't think of her needs she thinks of others first. The make a perfect couple. I hope to see a second money or other smiliar movies. I am going to buy this movie.

... this may be the movie for you. It was the most gorgeous visual feast I've seen in a long time! But if you're looking for anything beyond that and some silly "breaking all the rules" love story, you'll be left hungry. If I was Indian, I'd probably be offended by it. If I was a man, I'd sleep through it. As a woman, I find the idea of a grown woman accepting lifelong slavery to some cinnamon and red chilies so ridiculous it was difficult not to laugh at how serious this movie took itself. Watch it with the volume muted and enjoy Rai's face and the sumptuous colors if you must. Or better yet, just watch Monsoon Wedding.

This movie was such a disappointment. Yes, the actress was very pretty, but the acting was awkward, ripe with long stares and uncomfortable silences and those shy glances fit for junior high crushes. Various plot lines, like the childhood of McDermott's character, should have been better developed, but was thrown in like an afterthought. The whole "Spices, I will not abandon you, and yet I have to have Doug every time" got a little tired. This movie had a lot of potential, but definitely fell short.
