Having travelled in both Pakistan and a little in Afghanistan, the portrayals of the refuge camps were accurate and heart wrenching. Tom Hanks delivers a great performance as the Texas congressman. This is a story about short term political decisions were/are made without an understanding of the long term ramifications. Charlie Wilson had no concept of the chain if the events that could follow. I loved this movie for that and of course Tom Hanks, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ned Beatty were amazing as usual. Anyone of any age should see this even if they didn't live through it. Had a lot of great actors in it, just wasn't a whole lot of a movie for me. Basically about an undercover war in Afganistan that the American Government, actually one congressman, basically to stop the Russian invasion of the 1980's and the spread of Communism. Had some good parts, but over all, I wasn't to impressed. It is a one time watch. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

It reminds me of some of the clever old Bogart movies with drama and humor set around true events. However, this is unique today in that it is based in real events that are still ongoing world issues in in Middle-East, Eastern Europe and Asia. Great true story. Wonderful depictions by the actors. See the Special Features, "The Real Charles Wilson" and you will see how close they came to providing a great representation of the real people. Besides the obvious historical and political significance of this topical story, it is a deliciously entertaining movie. Very watchable. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Not entirely historically accurate: see the book "Ghost Wars of the CIA" by Stephen Coll for a detailed account. CIA Director William Casey had more to do with supporting the mujahedeen and nearly got us into a war with the Soviet Union. The sad ending is true: once the Soviet Union left, we lost interest and in came the Talibarn Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Meryl Streep would've been a better choice for that role. Definitely one of Tom Hanks better roles. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More Have you every watched a movie, manage to get all the way through it, but yet wasn't sure if the movie was worth the watch? You got that with this movie and I don't know if it was the script, actors, or just not a good match between actors and characters. I saw the actual bio on A&E(I believe) and found that way more interesting then this adaptation. With that said this leaves asking the question "Was it really worth the money to remake?" Read More If there was any doubt in anyone's mind, Philip Seymour Hoffman continues to prove that he's the best actor in Hollywood today. From Capote to Before the Devil Knows You're Dead to this film, he keeps showing time and time again he can play anything. He really shines in this movie, a forgettable political film that tries to wax philosophical about the current war in Afghanistan. Parts of it are funny, parts of it are poignant, but overall, Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts don't do much to make this stand out. Hoffman, however, rocks. ;-) Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL?
