Read More This film by West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin has the writer's snappy dialogue. The performances are solid, the pace is slow, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman is fun to watch. The contention made by the movie that Charlie Wilson defeated the Soviets in Afghanistan is beyond simplistic: it would be like saying the French were primarily responsible for the Americans winning their Revolution or the USSR was responsible for Vietnam outlasting the United States. The suggestion that his actions led to 9/11 are even thinner. However, the film is watchable -- somewhat like a great TV movie. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No | ||

Read More Some people come across in a great light, some come across in a bad light, In my opinion, this movie proves Mr. Wilson belongs in federal lockup. He created Bin Laden and allowed the religious fighters to build religious schools that tout death to the US. I like a good movie this one shows why we have sexual harassment laws; Mr. Wilson is twisted in his way with women, drugs and his need for power. This movie glorifies all that is wrong with our get buzzed all the time society and shows how hypocritical we are when we are with the ultra religious style christian right. Julia Roberts is about the only bad thing I have to say abotu this picture as it is a great movie and is well acted and written. Sorkin wins again in my book. It's definitely an interesting historical drama. According to a cousin of mine, who works for a senator, it is also very accurate. I'm not sure if it manages to inspire one with a vision of the greatness of our nation or disillusion one as to the magnanimous goals of this country, but it certainly educates and entertains. There is a quote from Charlie Wilson himself shown as the last scene (I won't ruin it for those who have no seen it) but it definitely puts the events shown in the movie and recent events in Afghanistan into perspective. Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts are wonderful, as usual. Amy Adams and Phillip Seymour Hoffman are wonderful in their roles as well.
