Tom Hanks is great, but Hoffman steals the show. His character is hilarious. He deserved the Oscar as best supporting actor for it. Read More This docudrama tells story story of the Texas congressman Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks) who instigated funding to arm Afghan refugees against the Soviet Union in the 1980's. Assisting Wilson's fight are a Texas socialite (Julia Roberts) & CIA agent (Phillip Seymour Hoffman). Interesting storyline aided wonderfully by bio under special features section of DVD. I read numerous books on that era & found out that amzingly almost almost every thing they showed in this movie is correct. Of course the Afghani tribalism were not and the role of Pakistani intelligence's contribution & planning were not discussed but people need to remember that it was a movie about Charlie Wilson and not the Afghan war.
It looks like that some of the facts were deliberately shown incorrectly such as Afghan Cmdr Massoud receiving the majority of the aid from US. The real facts asserts that Gulbuddin Hekmatyar was actually the primary recipient.
I also believed that the Pakistani President Zia's role was not done in the right way by Indian Actor Om Puri. The only thing matching was his hair style.

Hanks and Hoffman delivered exceptional performances. What I loved most about this movie was its non-dialogue subtleties and astute attention to details. What I didn't like about this movie was Julie Roberts and her pseudo-aristocratic southern accent. I could have done with a little more action and war footage (im female so this isnt a macho, blow-stuff up thing). Hoffman's speech about the story of the Zen master at the end left me contemplating long after the movie. It was a great movie that requires your full attention to appreciate its complexity. Read More My usual impression of Julie Roberts in a movie is she acts like Julia Roberts in every movie. She usually doesn't seem to change characters only there names.
