A few moment's , some incidences can transform a person's life completely and this movie shows one such incidence ina young preson's life. I think this movie has more positive than negative in it unlike most movies made these days and deserves every award it got . Please do watch it. It might also open the eyes of most American's as to how 2/3 of the people of this world live . Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

This is a South African production which is in, believe it or not, the native language. If you can't handle subtitles then this type of movie is probably not for you anyway. It is a thought-provoking story of what happens to a boy's heart (and decency) when he grows up in a culture of violence and poverty. However, it is not one of those "everyone should feel sorry for the thug" films. Great movie completely deserving of its Academy Award. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More Really amazing movie based on a novel by Athol Fugard. (I'm incredulous that someone complains about seeing a South African movie in the native dialect and holy moly! being subjected to the torture of reading subtitles.) Brutal, touching, redemptive, so few adjectives trying to describe the emotional power of this compelling movie. How a young man so deprived of love and safety discovers the healing power of love through a small baby. Music by Miriam Makeba. Good special features and we are given alternate endings and I absolutely prefer the ending of the final cut. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

His distant, brooding eyes perfectly convey his attitude and background. However, the whole bit about carrying a baby around undetected in a shopping bag just doesn't work, and the plot generally wanders. The basic story line had great potential, but it wasn't developed very well. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More A bit depressing, but what about shanty town South Africa isn't? Beautifully filmed and brilliant at describing the true rich/poor division, which used to be primarily white/black. Although I generally wouldn't for the 'thug' on the street I felt empathy for Tsotsi's situation and could understand the role his earlier childhood played in his mental and emotional development. One scene with his parents is hardly enough to truly explain what was happening (without the movie description or an understanding of the spread of AIDS in South Africa). Read More I don't particularly care for foreign films because I don't care much for dubbing or subtitles but I was in the mood for something different and this got great reviews all around so I took a chance. I was not disappointed.
Despite the fact that it is a foreign film with subtitles it has a lot of heart and the performances were terrific. It has made me look at foreign films in a new light. I would recommend this movie to anyone. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More The film is just too loaded with the problems we have swept under the rug where humanity and most of us is concerned. To be as selfish as one of the reviewers so grumpily describes the story line and fixates on a baby, is almost true in spite of its mean spirited and non christian attitude. Still, it is a film no one needs to see because of the timing of what state the world we live in is affecting even the middle classes of America...we care less about the poor than ever, and have abandoned an entire people in New Orleans without any guilt whatsoever. Conversely, it would be tantamount to watching a Jim Carrey comedy after winning a hundred million dollars in the lottery that day. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL?
