Read More Although a marked improvement from the sorry 2003 remake, "Beginning" still disappoints. Considering two of the main characters are headed to Vietnam suggests that the filmakers understood the subtext of Tobe Hooper's original. Sadly, the plot is mostly recycled elements from the original & remake, particularly the final act. Liebesman is wise not to fully reveal Leatherface unmasked, however, he is given a stereotypical serial-killer backstory, his skin-mask fetish reduced to the less distrurbing reason of hiding facial deformities a la Jason. Bryniarski is intimidating, but outside of R. Lee Ermey's twisted drill sgt...uh, sheriff..., the rest of the clan remains uninteresting. Fans of KNB will love their effects in this one. If you can't handle gore, don't rent a film with the words "chainsaw" & "massacre" in it's title. Finally, I recommend instead the new Ultimate Edition of the1974 classic. It's never looked better, and has great special features. That is the true 'beginning.' Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

But hell its good. Besides the gore fest, you get a decent beginning story, that sets up the movie really good later. More Chainsaw than the one a couple of years ago also. Non-stop gore in this one. EXCELENT gore!!!!! many chainsaw stabs through chests and cuts all over. Well worth a rent for horror fans. I gave it almost 5 stars, but 4 1/2 because there is no perfect movie. Scary...no way. It was obvious they were purely going for shock value here and that's about it. I think they missed an opportunity to make an awesome film combining horror and shock/gore with a great story line. A title like "The Beginning" leaves room for a great story to be told about what this f@#$ed up family is all about. Instead, they opted for the cheap thrills without much thrill. Disappointing. I GUESS THAT MEANS THAT I DIDN'T FIND IT ALL THAT GREAT. I THINK I WAS JUST REALLY DISAPPOINTED WITH THEIR FAILED ATTEMPT AT MAKING THE AUDIENCE FEEL BAD FOR LEATHERFACE. IT WAS OKAY, THOUGH. IF YOU'RE A TRUE HORROR FAN, YOU WON'T FIND THIS MOVIE TO BE A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME. JUST DON'T EXPECT TO BE "AWED." Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No
