If you're looking for a movie about some evil dictatorship, this is not quite it. By telling the story from the point of view of his personal physician, you get a different sense of General Amid. Don't get me wrong, the attrocities are still there, but the movie doesn't spend 2 hours telling you about them and horrible everything is...because the narrator...the physician, didn't see many of these things and so he doesn't dwell upon them. My wife and I greatly enjoyed the movie. There were few ghastly scenes that make you cringe, but they are still there and placed at intervals to remind you that, no matter how likeable Gen. Amid seems to be, he is still doing horrible things to his people.

This movie was very fast paced and kept my attention. James McAvoy's character began with lofty ideals of helping the helpless in Uganda. As the story progressed, it seemed like all he was interested in was helping himself to the women, status and luxuries available to those at the top. He finally realized that with power comes corruption and his undoing was trying to get out of the hole he had dug for himself by aligning with a powerful corrupt leader.

I can see why this movie has had it's share of awards and especially Forrest Whitaker's performance. I don't think any other actor could have played the dictator. I had forgotten in watching the movie that he was not Idi Amin. The movie was not only about Idi Amin and if they are true accounts, it also covered the young Scottish doctor who misunderstood his purpose for being in Uganda which was Idi Amin's country. However, I felt the doctor meant well even though a bit misguided.

Forest Whitaker proved himself yet again as a grrrrreat actor. I heard about Idi Amin when I was in my teens in the 80's but I did not know much about him. This movie helped clarify what was true and false of what I'd heard in my youth. I think Whitaker did a great job in his portrayal of Amin.
