It takes an in-depth look at Amin's magnetic and engaging personality and then his decline into erratic, paranoid behavior. The film prompted me to read up about Amin and I was pleasantly surprised that many of the events in the film are true.

To reviewer Pearl J: The horrific "chopping up" of Kay did in fact happen, although probably not for the reason the movie explained. See Amin's obituary for the story at: http://www.guardian.co.uk/obituaries/story/0,3604,1020657,00.html. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

There were some negatives I feel. Since the movie is short it missed out a lot of facts about Idi Amin. I feel that if you do not know much about Amin you may not appreciate or know exactly what the film is trying to portray. Overall, it was a very good movie but it did not live up to the hype. I feel it won the academy award for best actor because of what it was signifying. (The harsh reality of the african natives) Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

I would strongly recommend that you see this one. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More I am no fan of Forest Whitaker, having seen him in two highly overrated roles in The Shield and ER. Here he is excellent as Idi Amin, capturing his demented charm that made him a very heavily covered figure in the 70's.
James McAvoy does an equally impressive job as the Scottish doctor who arrives a bit wide eyed and gets caught up in the spell of Mr. Amin.
The special features provides footage of the real Amin for those of you too young to remember him.
Hopefully, Mr. Whitaker will now stick to movies and refrain from ruining any more of my favorite tv shows! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

But I don't think this movie was really about the character Amin, who was the president of Uganda. So don't be fooled that this is about some king or about him. This story is more about this young doctor from Scotland who goes to Uganda. He ends up working for Amin and sees some terrible things on the job. It was interesting to see Amin snap so easy as a president all the time. Overall the movie was so-so. I think that the doctor should have been killed at the end, just because of some of the things he did. This movie is worth watching at least once. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Read More Why did a fictional movie have to be made about a so-called vicious dictator have to include the chopping of a Black woman that slept with a White male doctor have to be made up? According to rumors didn't Amin do enough bad things to tell a TRUE story? This movie was ill-intended and a fraud. Although Forest Whitaker is a great actor, the storyline sucks.
