To see the reality is kind of a disappointment. This film pretty much cut the knees out from under what has long been considered an inspirational group. I recognize that the realism is appreciated by some, but I see our country as already having a problem with anti-government cynicism. We need more uplifting tales, like Glory, to bring our people back together and unite us. This was not the film for that, so it's not something I would want my kids to watch and learn from.--- As a combat veteran and old soldier, I really did not like this one. Read More This is about raising the American flag atop Iwo Jima's Mount Suribachi, and the people who raised the American flag. And the people were presured to travel to the USA to raise the American again all over the country to sell War Bonds so that the War could go on, because the USA was running out of money. It was realistic and scary. On the other hand, the part of the movie that showed the experience of them touring and what they went through during this time was way overdone and repetitive. Read More I enjoyed the movie and it really struck accord with me on a couple of different levels. For one, as a student of history ingeneral and WW II in particular, it was good to see a story with which I was not familiar and set in the Pacific theatre of the war. Secondly, as a somewhat sentimental veteran, I really felt for the sailor and marines who found themselves in that situation. I think what struck me most about this was the fact that it kept my wife's attention. She saw me putting it into the DVD player and figured that it would be a good opportunity for her to catch a nap on the couch. She found that she was drawn in though and ended up watching the whole movie with me.
I can see where some folks have said the movie was too long. Maybe so, but as with the emotional pain that the movie portrayed, that experience is seldom over quickly. I think Eastwood told it how it needed to be told. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No | ||

I believe to be inappropriate for children. My husband thought it was a decent ... Read More Thought provoking, and a worthwhile movie. Dark toned, and a bit cynical. Warning: graphic violence and imagery. I believe to be inappropriate for children. My husband thought it was a decent movie, and commented that he had to really pay attention so not to lose track of what was going on - with which I agree. (Sometimes I lost site of who was who.) The story and character development was a bit disjointed, but I learned a few things that I didn't know. I didn't find it to be too terribly long of a film. I had to wonder about a bit of heavy handed and cynical anti-war - manipulating/lying to the public government sentiment, tone interwoven throughout the film though. It was a bit of a downer. My husband said he didn't notice it. Hollywood has been producing films leaning towards propaganda of late. I plan to do some looking up on the topic. It is very sad that there are so many GOOD MOVIES and that many of the fans can't see them because of the violence and sex shown. I have not seen Flag of the Fathers

It is very sad that there are so many GOOD MOVIES and that many of the fans can't see them because of the violence and sex shown. I have not seen Flag of the Fathers
for your rating and the reviews indicating length although I would have been VERY interested in seeing a movie about this subject. I always look in wonder at these men raising the flag in Iwo Jima. I guess I'll see it if they ever show in prime TV
