In the first in a series of detective comedies from director Blake Edwards starring Peter Sellers as bumbling French Inspector Jacques Clouseau, the mishap-prone snoop is actually a supporting player. David Niven stars as Sir Charles Litton, a suave jewel thief known as "The Phantom." Vacationing in a deluxe Alpine resort, Litton's real purpose is to purloin the Pink Panther, a gem of enormous worth owned by a princess (Claudia Cardinale). On his trail for years, Inspector Clouseau keeps losing his quarry, perhaps because his wife Simone (Capucine) is Litton's lover and alerts him every time her husband draws near. Also after the Panther is Litton's American nephew, George (Robert Wagner). At a posh costume ball at the princess' villa, the bauble is stolen and Clouseau, still trying to determine the bandit's identity, is framed for the crime himself. The Pink Panther made Sellers and his Clouseau act so popular that the character moved to center stage in a series of farcical sequels. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

The bumbling Clouseau is just to likeable for words. What will he screw up next? make sure you have a pillow to hold against your stomach, you will laugh so hard, you are going to need it!

First it refused to boot up. In the last hour of playing the film it would constantly be breaking up. I can't recommend the film for that reason, and for the slow plot.

This is the first of the Pink Panther films and when it was made David Niven was a bigger star than Peter Sellers and consequently had a bigger role.....I love it but this film is a combination romance/mystery/comedy from the "Mad Men" 1960's similiar to the original Casino Royale made around the same time.

When you're in any type of hardware supply store, somewhere there will be a picture of the pink panther looking down at you. This movie was unique in its time and really fun to watch. The scenery if you watch in blue-ray is spectacular. Robert Wagner looks like a teenager. Claudia Cardinale would be considered to be a fox even today. Slapstick comedy from the distant past.

The Detective isn't the main character, and alot of the comedy revolves around him. So this movie, while funny, has long moments were no comedy occurs do to its concentration on the criminals. The ending is rather mixed, some may like it as a twist, others will not. It reminds me of diabolik, the criminals are the heroes here. Its an old movie, so the soundtrack is limited to three themes, including the famous pink panther theme.

Incredibly disappointing. I love slapstick type movies but I only chuckled in the first 20 minutes twice and at the 30 minute mark I turned it off. Not that I'm a French expert, but the accents were terrible to boot.

I've read that this movie is TOTALLY hilarious, and is even better than the modern remake. So, that interested me -- plus I love early slap-stick humor so, I took a chance & bought this DVD from the store. ....OMG, what a complete SNORE-FEST!!!! For one thing, I thought Peter Sellers would have a bigger part in the movie, but half of the story revolves around 2 other characters who are NOT amusing in the least! .....Bottom line = Maybe this movie was considered "funny" once upon a time but, believe me, there's nothing even remotely funny about this dried out piece o' s**t.

This movie was clever and funny in 1964, today it wasn't.
