Read More This is a beautifully filmed, tragic story of Indian women confined to seclusion and poverty by Hindi doctrine following the deaths of their husbands. Circa 1938, this movie begins with an 8 year old girl being awakened and told by her father that she is now a widow. The girl is soon to be separated from her family, have her head shaven, and spend the rest of her life in an ashram with women of similar circumstance. This historically significant and thought provoking film is complimented by magnificent cinematography and music. Direction and acting are superb. It is disturbing that writer/director Deepa Mehta had to overcome extreme political pressure to produce this exceptional film. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More This film is no masterpiece, but it is well done. It is quite a tragic story and it is VERY sad to think this religious behavior is an accepted way of life. Most viewers will find this film to be quite slow, but that didn't bother me any. It is an important story and few people are aware of what goes on in this part of the world. Multi-layerd story. A bitter sweet love story, in the context of the oppression by Hindu practices/beliefs---evidently still continuing at some level in Indian society, though hard to believe in this day and age. In the name of "faith"and GOD, many sins abound, often in the extreme fundmentalist like forms of ANY religion. Very sad and almost sickening abuses of women abound in the context of GODS (Hindu) AND RELIGION. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More 1938--Gandhi is in jail--reforms are about to sweep India into modernity, and we have Chuyia, an 8 year old girl whose husband (yes, husband) has died and now she is a widow and must go to an ashram and live with other widows in poverty and removal from the world. The movie is about Chuyia and the other women, some of them quite elderly and frail who have been at the ashram for decades. Cinematography and music are wonderful as are all the actors. Previous reviewer said movie is in English--it is 90% in Hindi (?) with only a phrase or sentence here and there in English. Really incredible movie. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL?
