A French writer finds his life is once again being turned sideways by his footloose European friends in this sequel to the international hit L'Auberge Espagnole. Five years after we last saw him, Xavier (Romain Duris) has given up his aspirations of a career in international finance, but his new path as a writer isn't going as well as he hoped; his novel about his experiences in Spain has yet to be published, and lately he's been writing scripts for a French soap opera. When his French producers enter into a co-production agreement with a British network and Xavier lands an assignment ghost-writing a tell-all autobiography for famous fashion model Celia Shelburn (Lucy Gordon), he finds himself spending plenty of time traveling between Paris and London. In London, Xavier becomes reacquainted with Wendy (Kelly Reilly), whom he met during his time in Spain, and he wonders if he should take another stab at a relationship with her; Wendy is currently involved, but is increasingly frustrated with her boyfriend's drug problems and mood swings. Xavier is also infatuated with Celia, and wonders if a dalliance with the glamorous model might be possible. Needing romantic advice, Xavier turns to another old friend, Isabelle (Cécile De France), a lesbian who offers her understanding of women as well as a spare bedroom in her flat. Xavier also gets pointers from his ex-girlfriend Martine (Audrey Tautou), who has a child from a former beau and is trying to sort out her own romantic troubles. Russian Dolls (aka Les Poupées Russes) also features Kevin Bishop, reprising his role as William from the first film. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Most sequels seem to fall short in comparison to the original...this movie holds up. I highly recommend seeing the Spanish Apartment prior to watching this. In Spanish Apartment, you watch how several people from different countries can co-exist and even grow together. In Russian Dolls, you see how some of these characters have grown and matured, yet some did not. These two movies give a real look at relationships. Great soundtracks in both movies! If you have ever been to Paris or Barcelona, you will love these movies.

This sequel to The Spanish Apartment picks up 5 years after Xavier left Barcelona to return to Paris. It's entertaining, but not as good as the original movie, but nice to catch up with the original characters and see what they're doing. But it's a bit long and rambles a bit too much. Still, if you can sit back and enjoy his journey, I think you will like it. If you didn't see the original, then I highly recommend seeing it before you see this one.

Not having watched the Spanish Apartment, I was bored with this and gave up after 45 minutes. I found it to be self-indulgent with distracting "artistic" devices. I just didn't care about these characters.

I have not been to Spain or France but I have always wanted too......one day! I agree whole-heartedly with Troy B.s' review of the movie & thoroughly enjoyed both movies! I really like Kelly Reilly as an actress but be warned, she's the only one you will understand so get those Subtitles on ENGLISH! (-;

this movie was extremely boring and completely terrible. The main guy did not know what role he wanted to play and the writers and director seem to start the movie thinking about a subject and by the middle of it changed their mind. the movie is disjointed. Acting was good but completely and utterly boring.

This movie has been inspirational. It is one of those movies that gives you something to think about for the next couple of days; definitely not your commercial bang, bang, badabing badaboom crap hollywood shoves down your troat these days. Anyone can identify with the writer's search for his identity, his purpose in life and the meaning of love... What is love? Good stuff. Can't wait to see the prequel.

I sadly admit that I did not find this movie very engaging. Most guys would be envious of Xavier's conquests, but I found it rather difficult to believe. The chemistry between actors was lacking and the story was only slightly plausible. Only the beauty of European architecture stood out in this tepid dramedy.
