I know this film is regarded as a classic, but it struck me as rather commonplace and predictable. To my chagrin, the acting is exaggerated and the storyline is weird. It takes place in a "Mayberrry" type setting with a cast of quirky and bizarre Aunt Bee type characters. In fact, William Holden accomplishes the impossible by playing a macho stud who is a wimp. Or perhaps a wimp who is a macho stud.

This subject matter may have been a wild and wooly topic/film for the 1950s, but it's hard for me to imagine how it got all the academy award nominations. The first half was slow and boring, and the 2nd half wasn't much better. I think William Holden was a terrific actor in 99% of his films, but his portrayal of Hal Carter was so over the top it was almost unbelievable. Kim Novack was ordinary at best as an utterly boring small town girl who had nothing going for her other than none of the rest of the girls in town were supposedly as pretty as she.
