It's definitely pretty artsy, so if you live and swear by transformers, this might not be the flick for you. Sci-fi films are a hard genre to do well. Things need to happen quickly in order for the pacing to work and keep the viewer interested, but that sometimes gets in the way character development. I was floored by this. If it doens't have a lot of special effects then I'm usually bored with it. I wouldn't say it was the best sci-fi that I have seen but it did keep me interested throughout the movie. After watching Dragon Wars last night the acting seemed wonderful in this movie with at least some familar actors and actresses. The story line and the special effects were still well done considering what the movie was about. I would recommend renting this movie only if you love sci-fi. Love to watch movies about space travel and the discovery of the universe. Its a movie where you know this can happen where the sun just dies out and humans go out and try to save it, and not about nasty aliens with ray guns and cloaking space ships. Read More I loved Trainspotting and 28 Days Later. So basically I really think Boyle is a great director with a subtle style that can be both intimate/personal(Trainspotting) and tense w/o overused tactics(28 days later). I think Sunshine really works well and cannot but be compared to Alien in its ability to maintain a tense feeling w/o ever lacking quality. I've seen 'em all going back to actually seeing "2001, a Spacy Odyssey" when it was first released in theaters. This film is about personalities and problem solving on a space journey to the sun. The effects (visual and sound) are above average. The acting is good. The infusions of "mysteries-of-the-vast-unknown" tend to bog the story down in nonsense as opposed to providing wow factor. The menagerie of characters has the same range as all the other space mission films. My suggestion, just for fun, is to watch this with friends and see who can correctly predict the total body count. For sci-fi enthusiasts, it's not worth sitting through otherwise. Actually you and your friends would do better finding something else to watch. Sorry. It's just not that good to spend the time on. The story was slow and the character development was horrible. They tried to develop the characters in a matter of seconds and hoped that you would care enough when they died. Like the first character that died, it was this big dramatic thing and it was this very sad moment. You only met the guy twice before that, and I am supposed to be sad that character is dying? Give me a break. And then the rest of the movie just went down hill from there. Underlying message of this story, don't play GOD. It was a lame attempt at a movie, I expected so much more from it.
