The Bedroom Window (1987)
Member Rating:
In director/writer Curtis Hanson's 1987 chiller The Bedroom Window, architect Terry Lambert (Steve Guttenberg) experiences a most disorienting turn of events when his French lover, Sylvia (Isabelle Huppert) - the wife of his boss - walks over to the titular window in-between lovemaking sessions and witnesses a mysterious man strangling a helpless victim (Elizabeth McGovern). By the time Guttenberg comes to the window, he can see only a crowd of spectators. Because Sylvia wants to avoid a messy involvement in the case (which would soil her reputation, ruin her marriage and cost Lambert his job), Guttenberg agrees to pretend that he witnessed the attack. The ruse, of course, leads to a myriad of complications. And meanwhile, with the psycho still on the loose, Lambert sets out to find him. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

An entertaining cliff-hanger. This is indeed a new and different plot, with a Catc h-22 theme. Well acted, moves rapidly, takes one new twist after another.

In spite of a few gaping holes in the plot, this is a solid mystery thriller, with plenty of twists in the Hitchcock style. Great pacing, and always interesting. The cast is terrific and very likable, well directed. Thoroughly entertaining.

This movie started out like it was going to be a good movie, but half way through it changed. This is not one that I would like to see a second time.

Main character's married girlfriend sees attack from his bedroom window but won't testify. He tells police what she saw, claiming to have seen it himself. Case gets dismissed when it's revealed in court that he is too near sighted to have ID'd attacker. Detectives get suspicious and investigate him, conclude that he was the attacker, and also responsible for ongoing serial rapes and murders. He has several opportunities to explain what really happened, but doesn't. Instead, he follows the attacker to a bar, implicating himself in the next murder. He still doesn't go to police. Instead he confronts his married girlfriend at a ballet and is also implicated in her murder. Only the woman who was attacked outside his bedroom window now knows about the affair and that he's innocent. Together, they decide to put her in a position to be attacked again so the real murderer will be caught in the act. At that point the stupidity was too frustrating to watch anymore.
