What a fascinating movie. Although fictional and embellished with the director's artistic license, it protrays an emergence of Diane Arbus' life from a sheltered, family driven persona to that of a free spirit, one that goes on to become one of America's most prolific photographers. The scenes are filmed with deliberate precision to convey a aura of exoticism. I recommend that you watch the movie in it's entirety, then watch the director's commentary version to gain the full meanings of each scene. Look, it's an artsy movie and if you're not into this genre, then don't get this movie, but if you are a thoughtful and creative soul that enjoys this type of movie, then go for it. There's no violence, no gun shooting, no murder, it's just an arful film as a tribute to Diane Arbus.

I didn't have time sit through the director's commentary, but did Google Diane Arbus and found some interesting backgound bio on her, her life and her photography. In that context the movie does a good job, using fictional diologue and scenes to try and explain the what her artistry was about. If you work with it in that context it gives some meaning to what the bios were trying to say.

Painfully slow movie with a boring plot, Nicole Kidman falls for a guy with a hairy face. She never appears in the buff -- but to improve sales of the film, they slithered low & included an unrelated 30 second nudist colony scene at the tail end of the film (5 minutes into chapter 20).

What is so beautifully done is to have captured the allure and obsession with her subjects to the point of being consumed by them. I liked the way she earned the acceptance by her subjects in this film. I think she had to prove they were to be honest portraits and not just freakshow postcards. And to know them as people before being allowed to photograph them. It is definitely an unusual film, but the tension developed between her art and her family life was portrayed amazingly well and I imagine at the time it would have been quite a difficult stand to take for a woman to pursue a career in a male dominated world. The movie has a very dream-like quality and one that will continue to haunt future thoughts. I would think many people might find the film disappointing and repulsive. I think however Diane Arbus would have liked it quite well.

I will think twice before watching anymore of her movies she has to be on the weed if what she was doing was acting. Will make the 10 worst of the yr for sure!!!!Iv'e seen too much of Kidman and she just not that great naked. please spare the public anymore of her and downey as a team-it doesn't work!!!!
