It is only a problem if you can't read...This movie is a fantasy/nonfiction combination about the 1944 war in Spain. War is generally not very uplifting. The violence is necessary because it this is an attempt to tell a truthful story about a wonderful little girl with a great imagination during a time of war. I say these things because other members had many unrealistic expectations of a movie that they should have at least read the back of the case for. This movie is beautifully directed and the cast as well as script are wonderful!!! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More This movie was as beautifully filmed and conceived as it was brutal and sad. The parallels between the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War and the girl's harsh existence with the tasks given her by Pan were highlighted by the brutality in both. del Toro doesn't shy away from the grimness of fairy tales in this story, and he doesn't shy away from the grotesque in life either. But the use of violence and gore seems to punctuate Ofelia's beautiful alternate reality.
I was drawn to del Toro after seeing Hellboy, and though I was not as impressed with Cronos as I thought I might be, this movie moves him back to being one of my favorite directors. The subtitles didn't even make an impression on me - the story was that good and the film that luscious, visually. Not a film for children or the literal minded. I usually don't find them worth my time, but this film was an absolute exception. It was beautifully made and I really just couldn't take my eyes off of it. I plan to add this one to my collection. More of it was about war in 1944. Even the parts with the child I found not really appropriate. The characters are from the underworld after all. My husband told me when he got home that he could have told me that cause he knew the story. Well I didn't so I am warning other parents. Other that it was a great movie. Just don't watch with the young children. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More i read many of the reviews for this movie. and only one of them mentioned how depressing this movie is. this is the movie you watch if you need motivation to commit suicide. its that depressing. i can get passed the fact that the movie is in spanish. i can get passed the english subtitles, but wait... the people who made this movie speak english. what the hell. anyway, i really just felt like crap after watching this movie. and because of that i cant reccomend it for anyone. i understand people saying the trailer is misleading. it looks like a epic fantasy movie. theres one thing i cant get over. when i put in my copy of
"rocky " on dvd and go to languages, the movie is dubbed over in other languages other than english. yet this movie is spanish only. wtf. this movie made all it money in america. an predominantly english country!! bottom line: i hated this movie. i watch movies when i am depressed to take my mind off things. this movie actually makes things worse.
